Continuing with the chakras, this week my Power Flow class worked on the 3rd chakra, Manipura. We worked on harnessing our personal power and autonomy.
The 3rd chakra is located at the solar plexus, two inches above the navel. Its element is Fire, and its color is Yellow. One of the affirmations for this chakra (which I read in my class) is: “I honor the power within me.” This chakra’s basic, inalienable right is: The right to act and be an individual. We started class in savasana, hands on our bellies–feeling the sensation of our breath rising and falling. During the students’ time in savasana, I read a few pieces from Anodea Judith’s book, Eastern Body, Western Mind. I picked out the following passages:
To restructure the way we think of power and to channel and contain that power within our own being is the challenge of the third chakra.
What is needed to reclaim our power is to enter into an entirely new dynamic, a new definition of power that lifts us out of struggle and into transformation, out of the past and into the future, one that inspires, strengthens, and empowers individuals without diminishing others.
…Power is not created from staying safe; power comes from the willingness to leave the world of safety and move forward into the unknown. As we meet challenge, it strengthens us by forcing us to grow. Power, like a muscle, will not increase by doing nothing.
If you have an excessive 3rd chakra, you may exhibit these characteristics: overly aggressive, stubborn, competitive, and/or arrogant. If you have a deficient 3rd chakra, you might have: low self-esteem, act passively, unreliable, and have a victim mentality. To have a healthy, balanced 3rd chakra, you are not afraid to make mistakes or take risks.
Because this chakra deals with the solar plexus, we concentrated our energy in the core. Thus, we worked on postures like, Ardha Chandrasana (half moon), Parivritta Parsvakonasana (prayer twist), Navasana (boat pose), and others.
I hope everyone felt their 3rd chakras opening and receiving balancing energy!
