I love music, who doesn't? One of my favorite things to do is make playlists, especially for my yoga classes. I like sharing new and old sounds with people. I gravitate towards mostly women-identified musicians, and I didn't know this was a potential "issue" when teaching yoga, but apparently it is.
Today is the 44th birthday of feminist musician and activist, Kathleen Hanna. Her work and her personality has meant so much to me over the years. In 2010, I had the chance to interview Kathleen, and I couldn't believe it. Her answers were amazing (as I knew they would be), and I was so thankful that someone as busy (and as cool!) as her would say "yes" to being interviewed by little ol' me.
Jessie: “Slater, haven’t you heard of the Women’s Movement?” Slater: “Sure… put on something cute and move it into the kitchen”
No switch was turned on. There was no “light-bulb-moment.” It was more like a snowball effect—feminism began piling up; year after year. It was just me, this really big snowball, and Jessie Spano.
