I'm feeling really sad and contemplative today. I read yet another account of a young woman who committed suicide as a way to escape bullying and slut-shaming.
I got my period in fifth grade, and just like that, my breasts were grenades waiting to be set off. I got a set of curves that I had absolutely no idea what to do with. Was it the Italian in me that grew curves? Or was it the American in me—from growing up in a culture of Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, and Lunchables?
Oh, you speak Italian? That’s cool! Ever speak it in the bedroom? *wink wink*
He’s had a few drinks, and I can tell he’s feeling a bit too comfortable. Amidst his awkward laughter, he tells me he’s kidding. I know he’s not, because I’ve been here far too many times.
As many of you know, I created and currently moderate (with the help of four other awesome people, a Facebook page called, Guerrilla Feminism. From time to time, I receive messages from users linking me to misogynist/sexist/racist pages, asking that I post the link on the GF board, so that others may report it to Facebook. I've reported many a Facebook page, and not surprisingly, but still saddening, Facebook does not take action. A few of the Facebook pages I reported are: "RAPE is just sex that you didn't know you wanted," "12-year-old Sluts," and "RAPE is always fun." On one of these pages, the profile photo is of a young woman bound and gagged. I reported these to Facebook, and Facebook responded...
