The Body Stores What You Tell It, Part Deux

13 May

Lately, I’ve been trying to incorporate something my friend (and yoga teacher), Diana, once said to me. On one of my previous posts about body image, she commented:

The self talk that works best for me–especially on bad days–is that ‘I appreciate my body.’  If I can’t muster up “I AM F-ING HOT” or “I am beeeeautiful!” or “DAMN my legs have got it goin ON,” then I just try to remind myself how much I appreciate my body for getting me around every day and allowing me to be here–even if the here sucks at the very moment. Friday Favorite Five!

1. Kundalini Yoga

I’m taking a Kundalini yoga workshop once a week, and it’s amazing. I practice so much vinyasa flow that I sometimes forget about other kinds of yoga! This workshop is a great way for me to expand my yoga and meditation practice.

2. 1902 French Women Trading Cards

These are awesome. Released in 1902 by a French trading card manufacturer, these photos were meant to showcase women and their potential careers. Seeing as how it was the 1900s, the lack of sleeves on the women’s outfits were meant to be titillating.

3. Rasputina‘s cover of “You Don’t Own Me”

I love Rasputina, and lately I’ve been listening to their cover of Lesley Gore‘s, “You Don’t Own Me.” Ahhh, so good!

4. Fiona Apple released her upcoming album’s title!

And it’s 23 words long–love you FA. Here is the title in all its wordy glory:

The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do.

She is too awesome.

5. “Sloths Photo Bombing Stuff” is my new favorite Tumblr

I liked sloths way before they were “in” ;) In my high school social studies class, I used to nominate people to be “Sloth for a Day”–i.e. do nothing (I was weird, shut up).

40 Days of Meditation/Yoga

So, because I’m taking part in a “Yoga for Emotional Wellness” workshop, we have little “assignments.” These assignments range from journaling to practicing pranayama and asana. (more…)

My First Cleanse: An Intro

26 Jan

I’m going to be doing a “Wellness Cleanse” through the yoga studio I attend. It consists of eating healthy (mostly veg. or vegan) and then doing liquids for three days (broth and smoothies). Throughout it all, we have meetings to talk about our feelings and all that glorious stuff. We also have restorative yoga classes, as well as vinyasa classes that we will be taking. An “Intuitive Healer” is coming and we’re also touring the Whole Foods in Lincoln Park, which is amazing and enormous. (more…)

“Resting” is still yoga

21 Aug

Because I’m a Pitta, I can be very competitive, which, as most of us know, is the opposite of what yoga is about. For example, I have trouble taking Child’s Pose sometimes in between postures–I work to push myself in competition with others (and myself), which I don’t like. (more…)
