Ana Forrest, I disagree

26 Mar

Ana Forrest, Forrest Yoga creator

Ahimsa

Though I am not currently teaching yoga at a studio, I read much of the yogic literature I have from both a teacher and student perspective. As some of you may know, I have been reading Forrest Yoga creator, Ana T. Forrest’s book, Fierce Medicine: Breakthrough Practices: to Heal the Body and Ignite the Spirit. There is so much in this book I identify with and love, but yesterday, while reading I came across something Ms. Forrest and I greatly differ on.  (more…)

Friday Favorite Five!

9 Mar

1. Kundalini Yoga

I’m taking a Kundalini yoga workshop once a week, and it’s amazing. I practice so much vinyasa flow that I sometimes forget about other kinds of yoga! This workshop is a great way for me to expand my yoga and meditation practice.

2. 1902 French Women Trading Cards

These are awesome. Released in 1902 by a French trading card manufacturer, these photos were meant to showcase women and their potential careers. Seeing as how it was the 1900s, the lack of sleeves on the women’s outfits were meant to be titillating.

3. Rasputina‘s cover of “You Don’t Own Me”

I love Rasputina, and lately I’ve been listening to their cover of Lesley Gore‘s, “You Don’t Own Me.” Ahhh, so good!

4. Fiona Apple released her upcoming album’s title!

And it’s 23 words long–love you FA. Here is the title in all its wordy glory:

The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do.

She is too awesome.

5. “Sloths Photo Bombing Stuff” is my new favorite Tumblr

I liked sloths way before they were “in” ;) In my high school social studies class, I used to nominate people to be “Sloth for a Day”–i.e. do nothing (I was weird, shut up).

40 Days of Meditation/Yoga

7 Mar

So, because I’m taking part in a “Yoga for Emotional Wellness” workshop, we have little “assignments.” These assignments range from journaling to practicing pranayama and asana. (more…)

Friday Favorite Five

17 Feb

This week’s 5 favorite things!
1. Kathleen Hanna – The Collapse Board Interview

This interview is lovely (I’m biased, because I love anything KH does, but I think you’ll love this, too). Kathleen talks about how she got into music, living in NYC with her husband Adam, and her new band: The Julie Ruin! One choice excerpt:

It doesn’t matter what you do, if you’re not a straight white male you’re going to get more harshly criticized than other people so you might as well just do whatever the fuck you want.

2. Fierce Medicine: Breakthrough Practices to Heal the Body and Ignite the Spirit – Ana T. Forrest

I’m only half way through this book, but it’s amazing. It’s gotten me really into Forrest Yoga to where I’m throwing around the idea of, at some point, doing Forrest Yoga teacher training. Ana Forrest’s story is extremely moving, interesting, and inspiring.

3. This Oscar Wilde quote:

Every woman is a rebel.

4. Downton Abbey, Season 2 Finale!

Because my friend Kelly is awesome (and because she bought seasons 1 and 2 on DVD), I got to watch the season 2 finale before it aired on U.S. tv! It.is.amazing. Best season finale ever!!!

5. “The Golden Girls” valentines!

I came across this on tumblr, and I laughed for a long time. Enjoy!

My First Cleanse: An Outro

12 Feb

The Wellness Cleanse is over! Today marked the last day. My group had a yoga class together–slightly different from our normal classes, as we held each pose for 8 breaths. Then, we had a delicious potluck of clean food! It was yummy! (more…)
